The history of the suburb dates back to the 1800s. The name of the place comes from the Aboriginal word meaning "stones". Before the Europeans came and settled here, the place was inhabited by the native Australians. When Europeans arrived in the 19th century, Taringa was primarily an agricultural place, with farming being the main activity. The Main Line railway was established on 14 June 1875. The urbanisation in the area came with the coming of this main railway line. Also, the Taringa House was built in 1880 and is now part of the heritage-listed places.

Taringa QLD has an area of about 2.1 square kilometres and nestles 7.3 kilometres away from Brisbane CBD in the west direction. As per the 2011 census, the population of Taringa was 7,176, which rose to 8,732 in the year 2021.
